KSU Black-Flag Rally in Shillong Turns Violent
A black-flag motorcycle rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, turned violent, disrupting normal life and raising tensions between Assam and Meghalaya.
According to police, 31 vehicles were damaged, 16 people were injured and two vehicles were set ablaze during the violence. Several of the damaged vehicles were reportedly registered in Assam.
The violence reportedly involved stone-pelting, assaults on civilians and damage to public and government property. Statues of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda were also reportedly vandalised.
The incident has had repercussions beyond Shillong, with tensions subsequently reported along the Assam-Meghalaya border, including disruptions at Jorabat.
Assam and Meghalaya Chief Ministers Appeal for Peace
Following the KSU black-flag rally in Shillong, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the violence and its aftermath.
Sangma said the two governments had agreed to work together to restore normalcy. Sangma appealed to citizens of both states to maintain peace, harmony and restraint, stressing the longstanding relationship between Assam and Meghalaya.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also conveyed Assam’s concerns over the incidents in Shillong, particularly those involving Assam-registered vehicles. He called for mutual respect, restraint and sensitivity between the two neighboring states.

What Was the KSU Protest About?
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) organised the black-flag motorcycle rally after the expiry of a 15-day ultimatum issued to the Meghalaya government.
The protest was linked to the KSU’s five-point charter of demands. Among the issues raised were implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), reforms in recruitment through the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and District Selection Committees, and regulations concerning migrant workers.
The rally began as a protest but later escalated into violence at several locations in Shillong.
According to police, 31 vehicles were damaged, 16 people were injured and two vehicles were set on fire. Police subsequently registered 15 FIRs in connection with the violence.
The Meghalaya High Court has also taken note of the violence and directed authorities to take action against those responsible. The court noted concerns over damage to government, police and public transport vehicles and the safety of civilians.
Three KSU Leaders Arrested
Following the violence during the KSU rally in Shillong, Meghalaya Police arrested three senior KSU leaders.
Those arrested included KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar. Police said the arrests were connected with alleged assaults, vandalism and damage to vehicles and public property during the rally.
The arrests have added another dimension to the dispute, with authorities facing pressure to maintain law and order while addressing the concerns raised by the protesting organisation.
Tensions Escalate at Jorabat
The fallout from the Shillong KSU violence was felt in Assam on August 20, 2026, when protests and road blockades were reported around Jorabat, a key entry point between Assam and Meghalaya.
Assam-based taxi and commercial vehicle operators participated in protests, and movement towards Meghalaya was disrupted. Reports said the blockade followed the targeting of Assam-registered vehicles during the violence in Shillong.
The situation created difficulties for commuters and travellers moving between the two states.

Assam-Meghalaya Relations Under Strain
The KSU black-flag rally in Shillong and the subsequent developments in Assam have raised concerns about tensions between the neighbouring states.
