The judicial proceedings investigating the tragic demise of legendary Assamese musician Zubeen Garg have reached a critical turning point. A dedicated fast-track court in Guwahati recently completed a pivotal two-day deposition from Parikshit Sharma, an Assamese NRI residing in Singapore who was present during the fatal yacht outing near Lazarus Island in September 2025. Marking a significant milestone in the prosecution’s effort, Sharma stands as the first among 11 key overseas witnesses from the Singapore-based Assamese community to formally record an account before the Indian judiciary.

During the court proceedings, Parikshit Sharma completed comprehensive cross-examination conducted by defense lawyers representing the primary accused. While adhering strictly to court sub-judice confidentiality by avoiding specific evidentiary details, Sharma publicly expressed unwavering confidence in the legal process. He noted that as many as 26 individuals were present in the vicinity on the day of the incident, confirming that approximately 11 witnesses who were in Singapore remain eager and prepared to give their official statements to help establish the exact sequence of events.

This high-profile trial stems from the tragic drowning incident during a cultural trip to Singapore that ignited widespread grief and political demands for justice across Northeast India. The Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has charged key figures—including event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, associates, and security personnel—under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
