Monsoon 2026: Heavy Rains Continue Across India as Assam Faces Renewed Flood Threat

India’s southwest monsoon remains active, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple states and disrupting daily life through flooding, landslides, and transport delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather alerts for several regions, including Assam, Kerala, Uttarakhand, and parts of Northeast India, warning residents to stay prepared for adverse weather conditions.

IMD Issues Fresh Rainfall Alerts

According to the IMD, intense rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country during the coming days. States including Assam, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Odisha, and parts of central India are likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Authorities have warned of localized flooding, landslides in hilly regions, and travel disruptions.

Assam Flood Situation Remains a Concern

Assam continues to remain one of the worst-affected states during the ongoing monsoon season. Fresh rainfall in upstream catchment areas has caused rivers to swell, leading to flooding in several districts.

The Assam government has clarified that the recent rise in river water levels was caused by heavy rainfall rather than any release of water from dams in Bhutan. Authorities have also cautioned the public against unauthorized flood-relief fundraising while relief and rehabilitation efforts continue.

Earlier official updates indicated that nearly 2.6 lakh people across multiple districts had been affected by flooding, with rescue and relief operations continuing in vulnerable areas.
